Vogue Vets & Wellness Centre - On the Path towards Net Zero

How is Net Zero Relevant to a Veterinary Practice?

Climate change poses a significant threat to animal health by altering habitats, increasing the prevalence of diseases and parasites, and exacerbating extreme weather conditions that can stress or harm animals.  Moving towards Net Zero is therefore crucial for veterinary practices wishing to help combat global warming.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted that up to 20% of medicines are wasted in some healthcare systems, mainly due to inefficiencies in supply chains and over-prescription.

Here at Vogue Vets, we are committed to enhancing environmental sustainability and already have several measures in place towards this goal.

What are Vogue's Current Environmental Initiatives?

  • Reduce volatile anaesthetic atmospheric waste  -where appropriate, we use injectable agents and regional nerve blocks to minimize inhalational anaesthetics; we avoid high impact agents such as nitrous oxide; and we have invested in waste anaesthetic management ('DrugWaste' bins - see below)

  • Reduce pharmaceutical waste – using appropriate sized vials to reduce waste; dispose of pharmaceutical waste using 'DrugWaste' bins for incineration in a sustainable fashion

  • Reduce equipment waste - we avoid using “single use” pieces of equipment, where those pieces of equipment are able to be adequately disinfected and re-used without infection risk; we only open equipment intended for immediate use; and where appropriate for hospital use, we purchase reprocessed or reusable equipment

  • Packaging - We choose preferred suppliers with recyclable and reusable packaging where possible

  • Transport costs – stock orders are consolidated to reduce number of journeys for deliveries

  • Stock control – stock is managed so that supply is sufficient without medications expiring; and we reuse or recycle stock before reordering where appropriate

  • Product choice – we choose energy efficient equipment where possible

  • Energy usage - we use solar power and ensure electrical goods are switched off when not in use; the premises and water tanks are also insulated to reduce the need for energy use for temperature control.

Why is Use of  the 'DrugWaste' Bins so Important for Sustainability?

In human healthcare settings, such as hospitals and long-term care facilities, a significant amount of pharmaceutical waste is generated. For example, a study published in Science of the Total Environment found that up to 10% of the pharmaceuticals administered in hospitals are wasted, either due to expired medications, unused doses, or improper disposal.

There is increasing evidence that medications are ending up in our waterways, with active pharmaceutical ingredients being detected on every continent, including Antarctica.

What is the Significance of Medical Waste?

Studies of wildlife show that these ingredients are:

  • Altering reproductive behaviours

  • Impacting fight/flight response

  • Causing sex changes

  • Impacting nesting behaviour

  • Suppressing individualist behaviour

  • Changing Shoaling behaviour

  • Reduced fertility

  • Toxicities endangering certain species and threatening extinction

How does the waste reach the waterways?

  • through manufacturing of pharmaceuticals;

  • human consumption and subsequent metabolites (eg urine);

  • or (increasingly) through incorrect disposal of medical waste into; solid general waste, or directly into sewage system and waterways (eg medications, antibiotics and anaesthetics)

So, What can be done to prevent Medical Waste?

Vogue Vets & Wellness Centre is proud to be one of the first Veterinary Clinics in WA to utilize the 'DrugWaste' disposal bins for sustainable and compliant management of our drug waste. .

'DrugWaste' bins contain a unique gel solution that renders medication irretrievable and unrecognizable, enabling incineration of all drug waste.  This means drug waste can be safely managed without posing a danger to the community or to the environment.

As part of our commitment to animal welfare and global environmental sustainability, usage of the 'DrugWaste' bins ensures all our medical waste is disposed of in a responsible and compliant manner.

What's Next on this Pathway?

There is a global movement to promote a Net Zero initiative in the veterinary sector.  We are in the process of researching further products  that are currently available overseas to help us in our efforts.
